Opportunity:
A customer needed to guard a twelve foot long opening to a height of three feet. Due to the frequency of accesses using a fixed hard guarding was not the best solution. Another requirement of the customer’s was that using multiple doors in this location would not work.

Solution:
Controlled Motion Dynamics, an associated company of Skarda Equipment, completed the work to provide a solution to the customer that allowed for ergonomic ease of operation The CMDI design provides an adjustable and modular design.

The products used to create this machine guarding with safety interlock include 80/20 extruded aluminum for the frame, Humphrey pneumatic components, Wilkerson pneumatic components, Zimmer brakes, a Tolomatic double acting cable cylinder, and a Omron/STI safety switch.

The pneumatic assist guard door begins to function when the operator grasps the handle and presses the release button, which causes the Zimmer brakes to release and the Tolomatic cylinders to act as an air spring. This release allows the operator to raise and lower the door with minimal effort. When the operator releases the button, the Zimmer brakes hold the door in position. Even in the event of air loss, the brakes will lock and hold the door in position.

The modular design of this project means that this solution can be replicated so the door can be any length, multiple doors can be daisy chained together, and it can be mounted to any environment.
